Former Black Panther Leader, Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin (H. Rap Brown), Dies at 82

Rap Brown, one of the most vocal leaders of the Black Power movement, has died in a prison hospital while serving a life sentence for the killing of a Georgia sheriff's deputy. He was 82. Brown " who later in life changed his name to Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin " died Sunday at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, his widow, Karima Al-Amin, said Monday. Like other more militant Black leaders and organizers during the racial upheaval of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Brown decried heavy-handed policing in Black communities. He once stated that violence was "as American as cherry pie." "Violence is a part of America's culture," he said during a 1967 news conference. " America taught the black people to be violent. She was 83. Public visitation will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. It is located at 6101 DR. Martin Luther King Dr. in Fairfield. Ross Bell Youth Detention Center since October 2017, announced last week that she will resign. "I want to thank the commission for the opportunity and for the support over these last eight years, I've enjoyed working here," Grier told Jefferson County Commissioners during a committee meeting. "I've enjoyed working with the children." Grier said that she will take a job in metro Atlanta which she described as "managing director", but it won't be in government. Cahaba Medical Care Expands in West End to Serve 600 More Patients
